A day in the life of Stuart Wilkie, Security Manager

The Chesterford Research Park Security Team work hard to ensure the 250-acre site is safe and secure for occupiers, visitors and the Park team - a high priority for everyone working here. If you’ve ever wondered how unobtrusive yet highly effective 24/7 site security is facilitated at such a large, high-profile and busy site, read more from the Park’s ex-armed forces Security Manager Stuart Wilkie as he shares his duties, motivations, and why he’s proud to be a veteran.

Role, responsibilities and team comradery

“Being the Park Security Manager incorporates a vast range of responsibilities. From ensuring that every vehicle and person has a valid and genuine reason to be at the Park, to responding to and managing any emergency situations.

“My duties also include conducting regular patrols, audits of the life safety equipment around the Park, and additional security audits to ensure that a high-quality security service is being delivered - knowing that all Park staff, occupiers and visitors are in safe environment is of utmost importance to me and the team.

“I’ve recently been asked what a typical day looks like. Thankfully, there isn’t a typical day in my role! It begins at 7am with a briefing from my team to update me on any incidents that may have occurred during the previous night and any follow-up that is required along with an update to Park Management. I then look at the planned visitors coming to the Park and check the meeting rooms are set up and ready for the day’s delegates.

“Depending on the day, I could be responding to requests from occupiers in connection with access cards, conducting staff security training, implementing statutory industry changes, or supporting my team in the Control Room. The Security Team are able to deal with all eventualities as they arise, offering solutions to security matters with experience and speed, and I’m highly motivated by the positive feedback we receive on the team’s professionalism.

“Being a proud veteran, I can only describe the comradery within the team as being similar to my previous days in the military with everyone being so warm, friendly, professional and a pleasure to work with.

A beautiful working environment

“In my many years’ experience within the security sector, Chesterford Research Park is the most unique place I’ve known with its wildlife and open spaces; it’s a place like nowhere I have ever worked before. From my first initial visit I knew that it would be an honour and a privilege to work in such beautiful location and manage the security of a Park containing such talented, prestigious tenants.

When not in the Security Control Room…

“In my spare time I enjoy travelling to France and Belgium visiting battlefields, military cemeteries and WW1 museums to pay my respects to the people who made the ultimate sacrifice. You’ll also find me spending time with my family, eating out, reading, motorcycle riding, and busy with a new pyrography (woodburning) hobby that I started in the first lockdown.”
