A day in the life of Maggie Bennett, Operations Manager

The smooth running of Chesterford Research Park depends on our experienced Park team – including Operations Manager Maggie Bennett who proactively and reliably manages the Park to deliver first-class estate and occupier services.

Please describe your role at the Park.
As the Park Operations Manager, I am responsible for the upkeep and enhancement of the Park, including maintenance, cleaning, and grounds improvements. Additionally, I oversee the various services we offer to our Park occupiers, such as catering and transportation. My overall responsibility is to ensure the Park operates smoothly and conveniently for everyone.

What does a typical day look like for you?
A typical day for me starts with coffee, followed by catching up with different service partners about the day's activities and any ongoing tasks from the previous day. I spend much of my day around the Park, checking that maintenance issues are resolved, assisting occupiers, and ensuring the Park looks its best.

How did you come to be Operations Manager at Chesterford Research Park?
I began working for Cushman & Wakefield five years ago as a Welcome Host in Cambridge City Centre. I discovered a passion for creating positive experiences for occupiers and guests, which led me into facilities management. Over the past three years, I have steadily progressed to Operations Manager here at Chesterford. I take great pride in creating well-maintained, positive, and cheerful environments for our occupiers.

What skills, experience, and qualifications do you need for your job?
With a strong background in front-of-house and customer service, I am well-equipped to handle difficult situations and understand what is needed to maintain a site effectively. I completed my IOSH qualification before becoming an Assistant Building Manager, which provided me with risk assessment skills. Additionally, I have completed SIA training, which helps me manage our security partner and ensure the safety of our sites.

What is the best part of your job?
The best part of my job is working within a supportive team that prioritises the needs of our occupiers and seeing that come to life.

What do you like about working at Chesterford?
Where do I start? Chesterford offers a varied role, with each day being different, which I love. The beautiful site is a stark contrast to working in Cambridge city centre. The incredible nature at the Park makes it a pleasure to come to work every day!

Why do you think Chesterford Research Park occupiers choose to base themselves here?
Chesterford's beautiful landscape is unique compared to other research parks around Cambridge and is one of our best attributes. Additionally, the opportunity for occupiers to surround themselves with like-minded companies offers community and support to both startups and larger companies.

Can you share any upcoming Park initiatives or future plans?
We have two exciting new buildings on the horizon and are planning the addition of a green energy hub. This will create more space for our occupiers to grow and make us increasingly sustainable. In my new role, I also aim to open more lines of communication with occupiers, fostering community and opportunities for feedback and improvement.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
I enjoy spending time with friends, exploring new restaurants around Cambridgeshire. A lot of my time is currently spent planning my 2025 wedding and making sure my fiancé doesn't run away with too many ideas!
